In the mid-90s, Philip Tirone was denied a $100 line of overdraft protection because of a past mistake that was reflected on his credit report.
He was mortified. How could he—a mortgage broker—help his clients secure the best loans if he couldn’t even qualify for overdraft protection from his own bank?
Philip Tirone set about to correct his report and learn as much as he could about the word of credit scoring. Specializing in difficult-to-obtain loans for borrowers with subprime credit scores and/or stated incomes, Philip Tirone knew that becoming a credit guru would help his clients recover from past mistakes faster, saving them money by increasing their credit scores and lowering their interest payments.
After studying patterns in tens of thousands of credit reports, Philip Tirone identified the habits that most quickly increase a person’s credit score. He also discovered some shocking secrets about:
- The number of mistakes on people’s credit reports. (Unbeknownst to you, you have an 80 percent chance of having an error on your credit report!)
- How little the banks tell their clients about credit-scoring. (Watch this shocking SpyCam video!)
- The repercussions of bad credit. (Today, 60 percent of employers run credit checks at least some of the time before hiring employees.)
- The strategies used by creditors that suppress a person’s credit score.
From his findings, Philip Tirone not only increased his own credit score, but he also authored 7 Steps to a 720 Credit Score and the companion workbook, Applying the 7 Steps to a 720 Credit Score, which became one of Nightingale-Conant’s bestsellers.
He then set about to make this information freely available to the public, lobbying President Obama to support a nationwide outreach program that provides information about the credit-scoring system to consumers who have been through a bankruptcy or foreclosure. As well, Philip Tirone created a teleseminar that explains how banks are “legally robbing” consumers with high interest rates and shrouded credit policies. Philip’s seminar explains how consumers can build their credit scores and rebound from bankruptcies, foreclosures, repossessions, and collections.
Philip Tirone is the founder of the Mortgage Equity Group. A non-traditional mortgage company, the MEG provides each homebuyer with unique and innovative programs aimed at reducing interest payments and maximizing buying power. The company also ensures that clients receive education in increasing their credit scores to qualify for loans and lower their mortgage payment.
Philip Tirone graduated “Man of the Year” from Arizona State University in 1994.
Since then, his policies and ideas have been published in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, New York Times.com, Newsday, Woman’s World Magazine, San

A “credit card score” is a letter grade that reflects whether your credit card habits are helping you build credit or causing you to have bad credit: An “A” credit card score is excellent; an “F” indicates that you likely have bad credit. The lower your credit card score, the more likely you have bad credit and need to make immediate changes to your credit card behavior.
